Food and beverage machinery places unusual demands on a housed bearing: frequent cleaning, moisture, chemicals, corrosion risk and hygiene-zone requirements can matter more than maximum mechanical load. A bearing unit must be selected for the exact position in the machine. A product used near a washdown conveyor is not automatically approved for direct food contact, and lubricant or material requirements must be specified by the buyer.

Plastic housing versus metal: choose from environment and load

Engineering-plastic housings can be useful where corrosion resistance, low weight and washdown exposure matter. Their allowable load, temperature and chemical environment still need review. Stainless or corrosion-resistant inserts may be considered for certain wet positions, but the exact material and lubricant have to be specified. Standard cast-iron units can remain appropriate in dry, non-washdown zones where higher housing rigidity is the main concern.

Installation and integration checks

On food-processing equipment, installation details need to be checked at the actual shaft position: confirm the shaft is clean and within the fit required by the selected locking method. Mounting faces should be flat enough to avoid forcing the housing out of alignment. Check bolt and wrench access, guards, adjacent couplings or sprockets, grease access and whether thermal movement or frame deflection can change alignment in service. A bearing unit cannot correct severe shaft bend or a distorted machine frame.

Maintenance and failure feedback

Map the cleaning process before specifying the unit: chemical name and concentration, water temperature, spray pressure, frequency and whether the bearing is shielded from direct jets. After installation, inspect for seal damage, trapped residue and corrosion at fasteners or shaft interfaces. Never assume that a general “food grade” description satisfies the end user’s hygiene or regulatory program; confirm the required materials and lubricant for the ordered configuration.

What to include in the RFQ

For bearing enquiries involving food-processing equipment, send the machine type, current bearing model, shaft diameter, base or flange dimensions, locking method, speed/load information if available, environment, quantity and photos or drawings of the installed position. If the old unit failed, include the observed failure mode.

Frequently asked questions

Are engineering-plastic bearing units automatically food-contact approved?

No. Food-contact or hygiene requirements are application-specific. Specify the required material, lubricant and documentation for the exact machine zone.

Why use PBT housing?

PBT engineering plastic can offer corrosion resistance and lower weight, but chemical concentration, temperature and load must be checked against the selected housing data.

What cleaning data should be included in the RFQ?

Provide detergent or chemical type, concentration, wash temperature, spray exposure, cleaning frequency and any lubricant or material requirements.
